* Holy CRAP, this book is everything everyone says it is. Fascinating, infuriating, shocking, funny, and unforgettable.

** This is kind of a cheat, because I didn’t finish it. I liked Maisie very much, and I was interested in the story she was investigating, but the pace was a little too slow for at the moment. I’ll probably go back to it.

*** I cried so hard. SO hard. This book really blew me away.

It’s still Women’s History Month! I really fell down on the job when it came to posting, sadly. Making up for that this week!

I read a book about Jane Addams when I was a kid — there was a series of books called Childhoods of Famous Americans that had distinct orange covers (see above!), and all of them featured black and white silhouette illustrations. I LOVED them. I had my mom’s, which included Martha Washington, Dolley Madison, and Jane Addams.

Those books (which I think are still published in, updated I assume, paperbacks) introduced me to women I might never have learned about otherwise. Jane Addams was one of them.

Philosopher, sociologist, author, suffragette, and the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Jane Addams was a real pioneer.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MONTMARAY, by Michelle Cooper. Another book I loved so much, I made my mom read it.

Who can resist a book with a castle, and a ghost, and secret tunnels, and swords with names, and a mad king? It was also a really interesting look at the events leading up to WWII, which I am really shamefully not very educated about. Plus, the narrator is someone you know would be your best friend the moment you met her.

I can’t wait to read the next two in the series.

“The Westboro Baptist Church is about to get a big surprise in the form of a new neighbor who plans to give the notoriously anti-gay group a taste of its own medicine.

Aaron Jackson, one of the founders of Planting Peace, a multi-pronged charity that has in the past concentrated on rainforest conservation, opening orphanages and deworming programs, bought a house that sits directly across from the church’s compound six months ago. On Tuesday, March 19, he and a team of volunteers are painting it to match the gay pride flag.

The project — which the nonprofit is calling the “Equality House” — is the first in a new campaign Planting Peace plans to wage against the group. Westboro is known for its intimidating tactics of protesting (or threatening to protest) what they refer to as America’s pro-gay, anti-God agenda, in close proximity to pride parades, soldier funerals and other events like the Sandy Hook memorial services.”

“I didn’t know anything about the church or where they were located, but that story kept popping up. And one night I wondered, Where is this church? I got on Google Earth, and I was ‘walking down the road,’ and I did a 360 view. And I saw a ‘For Sale’ sign sitting in the front yard of a house. Right away it hit me, Oh my gosh, I could buy a house in front of the WBC! And immediately I thought: And I’m going to paint that thing the color of the pride flag.”

DIY Handwritten Plates

For this project, you will need:
-Porcelaine paint fine tip marker (can be found at most craft stores)
-painters’ tape
-white charger plate
-wedding vows or first dance song lyrics

Instructions:
1. Lay a strip of painters tape near the top of your charger plate to make a straight line for penning your vows.

2. Press firmly on the tape to make sure it’s securely in place.

3. With your porcelain paint marker begin to pen the first line of vows onto your charger plate. If you make a mistake you can wipe with a damp cloth or scrape off with your fingernail. Just be sure to do it right away!

4. Move the tape down the plate to keep your lines straight and continue penning your vows until you reach the bottom of your plate.

5. To ensure your charger plate is dishwasher safe let it sit for 24 hours and then bake it according to the directions on the marker packaging.
